Global positioning systems (GPS) have quickly become the gold standard as a cost-effective way for businesses with vehicle fleets to reduce fuel and fleet costs.

With GPS installed, businesses know the exact location of their vehicles. This helps businesses save fuel through dispatching efficiencies and improved routing. Data gathered by many GPS systems – including driver speed and idle time – can further help businesses by improving safety and decreasing fuel costs.

However, some GPS fleet tracking solutions offer tools and data gathering features that help business owners improve driver productivity and increase payroll efficacy – both of which can ultimately reduce overtime hours and garner additional revenue.

In fact, a recent study by Aberdeen Group, a respected firm that studies the impact of technology on business, reported that businesses experience a 23 percent increase in the total number of jobs completed per day per technician with GPS installed on their vehicles. The study also found a 14.8 percent reduction in average time per job and a 9.9 percent decrease in overtime pay.

Garmin has launched two new products for the City Navigator Israel software series.  The first product, now available for download, is Garmin nuMaps Onetime Israel NT 2012.  Also, you can grab your Garmin GPS navigation system and check out Roadsideamerica.com. RoadsideAmerica (RA), is the foremost internet guide to unusual and  bizarre tourist attractions.

The City Navigator Israel software series has a onetime update that will bring new life to the Garmin Nuvi 1310 preloaded model or original DVD software by reflecting the newest street and location changes in and around Israel.  An alternate option, the second product allows users to add Israel maps to their current GPS device. Garmin’s new Micro SD/SD card offers 60,000 points of interest throughout Israel, making historical sites, landmarks, restaurants, hotels and entertainment more accessible to travelers.

For the more exploratory types, Garmin also released a topographic map of Israel on Micro SD/SD cards. While less reliable for street data, users who enjoy outdoor activities can find detailed data about Israel. Some of the features included on the topographical map are terrain contours, elevations and summits, paths and geographic points. With a compatible Garmin GPS, users can view 3D terrain shading with the Digital Elevation Model (DEM).

For those of us who are a bit more adventurous, Garmin has recently launched a GPS System Routing/ Travel Guide called “Attractions and Oddities.” Roadside America is for tourists who like to find obscure spots that are off the beaten path. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), less than 20 percent of cell phones are recycled each year. Unfortunately, because many consumers do not know where or how to recycle cell phones, most often end up in landfills. This is quite a waste, since cell phones are made from precious metals, copper and plastics-all of which used energy to extract and manufacture. By sending used cell phones to landfills, consumers are throwing away precious resources.

There are ways in which all brands of cell phones-from used AT&T cell phones and used Blackberry cell phones to used Sprint cell phones and used Verizon cell phones-can be recycled. And, if consumers choose to recycle their used cell phones, they will be reducing green house gas emissions and conserving natural resources.

One way in which people can get started is by participating in the National Cell Phone Recycling Week. This program is sponsored by the EPA and is actually a joint effort with many different service providers, cell phone manufacturers, and retailers of cell phone products.
