Amazon.com, the internet bookstore giant, has been expanding its inventory to include a wide variety of products over the last few years, especially in electronics. In the past, Amazon have sold products made by other manufacturers, but they have recently launched their own branded products, which consist primarily of blank CD/DVD media and accessory cables for electronic goods.

One of their most recent additions to the marketplace, though, is a gadget called the Amazon Kindle, an e-book reader that can download e-books, newspapers, magazines and blogs from Amazon’s library of over 350,000 titles. This is Amazon’s first foray into manufacturing and so far it has been a success, sales-wise. The introduction of the Kindle 2 saw sales grow exponentially. The latest version, the Kindle DX, was released in June 2009.

A Surprising Move?

Amazon’s move into this marketplace was surprising because traditionally they have been a retail outlet rather than a manufacturer, and their infrastructure would have had to be modified to a great degree in order to facilitate this change.

Amazon’s largest strength as it begins to adopt this additional focus is its brand name recognition and brand trust. Everyone has heard of Amazon.com, and most people are familiar with the user-friendly and innovative ways they present themselves online. This can only mean good things for prospective sales.

They seemed to be coming in the mail just about every day now. Letters from colleges all over the country, practically begging Timothy to visit their campus. All of his hard work was finally paying off. His 4.0 GPA all throughout high school, his perfect attendance, his honor society memberships and volunteerism. His high SAT scores, his national spelling bee wins. It was time for Timothy to reap the benefits!

Tim was receiving full scholarship offers from universities far and wide. Famous ones like Harvard and Yale, and ones he had never heard of, like Bethane-Cook and Gardner-Webb. Ones close to his home in New Jersey, like Princeton, and ones across the country in California, like San Diego State. He was visiting as many schools as his schedule possibly allowed him to, but it was all becoming too overwhelming. He needed some help deciding which college would be best for him!

With over 80 scholarship offers, Timmy decided to eliminate many of them right off the bat because he decided that he wanted to remain close to home. Anyone who has a love of television and especially movies loves the idea of having a home cinema system.  There is a great selection of systems on the market and because electrical appliances have come down in price so much in recent years there is something to suit every budget.  Once upon a time home cinema was something that you could only consider if you had a lot of money to spare.

The first signs of people using audio and visual technology in this way can be traced right back to the 1960s when home movies were getting to be so commonplace.  There are still many older people with reels of cine film stored away in boxes in a dusty corner of the attic, but is over the last thirty years that such equipment has slowly become so much more popular.

Home cinema really began to take hold in the 1980s with the advent of the Laserdisc.  Sound systems were also beginning to get a lot more high tech.  By the time the 90s came along it was state of the art to have a large rear projection television hooked up to a S-VHS video player or a Laserdisc.   By the time that DVD and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound arrived on the scene in the late 1990s things were really getting interesting.  Read more...
