There are numerous accessories that are available for your car stereo. Some of them are key such as RCA cables and others are elective like wiring harnesses.

RCA Cables:
These are the cables required used to transfer pre-amp (line level) signals. Usually, you use this kind of cable for unamplified signals such as the connection between your head unit and amp or crossovers/eqs. Look for appropriate thickness and shielding. The end connectors should be strong enough to prevent breakage from stress. There is a notion that more expensive the cable, better the sound quality. However do not spend more than $1/foot. You may have to spend more to get cables immune to noise if that is a problem in your car.

Speaker Cables:
When the line level signal from the head unit is amplified it becomes much stronger and requires thicker cable to carry it. This is even more pronounced for subwoofer wiring. Use something between 9 gauge and 1415 gauge wiring for subwoofers, nothing smaller. A lot of current has to flow through those wires. For tweeters and midranges thickness is less critical but still key to prevent leakage and contamination from outside sources.

Power Distribution Blocks:
Power distribution blocks make wiring easier. You can run one thick power cable from the battery to the distribution block and from there you can use its multiple outputs for each component. With such a wide range of components and gadget on the market for car audio systems, the big question is “Where do I start?”

First you must decide what exactly you wish to do. If you are wanting to build a car audio system for a daily driver (the car you drive back and forth to work) with good sounds, but you are not interested in competing, a system can easily be put together for under $1000. However, if you are looking for the all-out bass monster, be prepared to drop in some big bucks into your system.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when building a car audio system is planning. Get an idea of where you are going to place components, subwoofers, amplifiers, and power distribution. A lot of headache can be avoided with the proper planning!!

For the basic system, lets look at some of the components needed.

Let’s first start with the head unit (CD player). Obviously you are going to want a nice head unit. If you start with a good quality cd player, and choose to upgrade your sound system in the future, purchase a head unit that will grow with you. Recently my wife and I purchased a beautiful new home. We have two sons (11 and 13) who have been begging me to buy a new Plasma TV. Secretly I wanted one as well but good but its not the type of purchase you just bring up to your wife. Since we were moving into a new house I thought the timing was right to ask the wife the idea. To my surprise she said sure.

We called this company in search of the perfect LCD/Plasma television. What they offered us was much more.

When I called, the informed me that they not only sold TV’s, but sold and installed a complete line of home theatre equipment. They had everything from home automation devices and automated lighting to incredible BOSE audio systems. They offered to come take a look at our new home to determine how to create the best home theatre experience given our layout. What started out as just another TV purchase turned into much more than that.

We purchased a 50″ Panasonic Flatscreen TV and had it wall mounted in our living room. We bought a cool touch screen which was programmed to turn on and off our new TV as well as the automated lighting system we opted to purchase. We also purchased a beautiful new BOSE sound system!
